Regionalization of care and the formation of Regional Healthcare Organizations (RHO) have been associated with improved patient outcomes and decreased hospital length of stay, but the impact of these on readmission rates and hospital-acquired conditions (HAC) has yet to be well understood. Readmission rates and HAC have been incorporated into Medicare penalties for hospitals, but such penalties are not currently assigned to hospital-physician partnerships or discharge agreements. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a local or state health department would be interested in the Medicare penalties associated with discharge agreements between hospital and physician groups. We developed a mail survey targeting state and local health departments in five states with various levels of HAC for hospitals, and analyzed responses. The majority of survey respondents (64%) indicated that they would be interested in the Medicare penalties associated with discharge agreements between hospitals and physicians. A small number of respondents (21%) felt they were not equipped to intervene. Hospital and physician groups could potentially reduce readmission rates and HAC by entering into these agreements and thus avoid the Medicare penalties.[The role of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in the management of chronic myeloid leukemia].
